USU Tennis Teams Soar Past Division II Chaminade

March 18, 2005

HONOLULU, Hawai'i - Utah State's men's and women's tennis teams didn't allow Division II Chaminade to win a single match Thursday afternoon as both teams won 7-0. The Aggies went out, won the doubles points, and didn't look back.

In doubles play for the women Courtney Anderson and Andrea Barker teamed for the No. 1 spot and took it 8-4. The other two doubles teams from Chaminade defaulted, and in turn handed the Aggies the doubles point.

In singles play the women were able to take the first four matches in two sets, never allowing the Silverswords to score more than three points per set. Lindsey Bennion was able to finish off the No. 1 match against Summer Tantee 6-2, 6-0 while Jill Smith took the No. 2 spot 6-1, 6-3. Carolyn Stephens only allowed two points in her match at No. 3, beating Alohalani Castro 6-1, 6-1. Lauren Monson rounded out the afternoon at the No. 4 spot, beating Cori Tamanaha 6-2, 6-3. At the No. 5 and 6 spots the Silverswords opted to default.

The men allowed even fewer points in their matches, seven total. Four of those points came from the No. 2 doubles match where Jonas Tyden and Mike Banks beat Sebasatian Valdes and Gerome Gregory 8-4. The Silverswords didn't score another point in doubles action as Lukas Bouton and Brad Ferguson won the No. 3 spot 8-0, and the No. 1 match defaulted.

In singles play Joao Pinho got the ball rolling as he beat Gregory 6-0, 6-2 to take the No. 1 match. Hannes Schenk then downed Brett Brown 6-1, 6-0 for the No. 2 spot and Roshan Rasekhi, Brad Ferguson and Dantley Young all won their matches 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3, 4 and 5. Jonas Tyden took the No. 6 point for the Aggies as Hale Metzger defaulted.

For the Aggies, the men are now 6-11 while the women are an even 6-6. The women will be in action again on Sunday, March 20 at 1 p.m. in Logan where they will take on Air Force. The match will be played at two separate locations. No. 1 and 2 doubles and No. 1 and 2 singles will be played at the indoor courts at the Sports Academy, located at 1655 N. 200 East. No. 3 doubles and No. 3 and 4 singles will be played at the Harris Research Facility, located at 1530 N. 1000 West. No. 5 and 6 singles will be played on the first available courts.

The men will be in action again on April 10 against Eastern Washington in Logan at 9 a.m.
