Harris Leads USU to Season Opening Women's Tennis First Win
Jan. 26, 2007 LOGAN, Utah - Brianna Harris was the only member of the USU women's tennis team to win her match in two sets as the Aggies posted a 5-2 victory in a hard-fought match against Montana here Friday. The match was USU's first dual of the season. Four of the six singles matches went to three sets as the Aggies won three of those matches. However, Harris cruised to a two-set win at number four singles, posting a 6-4, 6-0 victory. "Brianna played sharp," said USU head coach Chris Wright. "The others really had to work." USU's Courtney Anderson won the number one singles match in three sets against Liz Walker, 6-2, 6-7, 6-2, while teammate Erin Monson defeated Mari Castello at the number two spot, 6-7, 6-1, 6-0. Bridgette Strickland pushed her way to a victory against Jessica Souza at the number six spot, 4-6, 7-6 (13-11). USU took the doubles point as Anderson and Dee-Dee Nelson won at number two and Strickland and Harris won at number three. "It was up and down all day," Wright said. "I thought we played well and I was proud of them. They wanted this match and they came through.'' The USU women will continue their season on Saturday at 1 p.m. against Montana State. That match will take place at the Sport's Academy and Racquet Club and all tennis matches are free to the public.
