Fleming Named USU Athlete Of The Week

Logan, Utah-Sara Fleming, a junior from Roseville, Calif., hit three home runs, three doubles and ended with eight RBI last week. For her efforts she was named Utah State University Athlete of the Week. A state media panel votes on the weekly award.

Fleming, a second baseman, batted .533 (8-for-15) last week as Utah State split its two game series with Southern Utah, then took two-of-three games from Cal State Fullerton. She finished the week with a slugging percentage of 1.333 and an on-base percentage of .650.

Fleming is one of only three players for USU who have played in all 43 games this season and has started 42 of them. For the season she is batting .312. She leads the team in hits (40), doubles (15), runs (23), home runs (nine) and is tied for first in RBI (24).

The Aggies have now gone 10-15 since enduring a season-long eight-game losing streak.

Athlete Of The Week Nominees

Women's Tennis- Carolyn Stephens...Won the No. 3 spot at the Big West Tennis Championships in a 4-3 loss to Idaho. Stephens beat Marriel Tinnerello in three sets, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4. Stephens also won the No. 1 doubles spot 8-6.

Men's Tennis-No nominee.

Golf-Brett Black...Was USU's top finisher at the BYU PING Cougar Classic. Black led the Aggies to an 18th place out of 20 teams and finished 37th himself. Black finished the first two rounds at par, 72 each. In the final round he shot a 71 to finish with 215.

Men's Track -- Mike Nielson...Established a new Utah State record in the 5,000 meters with a time of 13:56.76. He finished 10th in the race at the Oregon Invitational.

Women's Track-- Lida Ripplinger... Established a school record in the 10,000 meters with a time of 36:03.04. She finished first in the event at the Oregon Invitational.
