Utah State Shutout By UC Irvine, 2-0, Friday Evening
Sept. 7, 2007
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. -
Utah State soccer suffered it's second straight loss, falling to former Big West foe UC Irvine, 2-0, Friday evening in the La Quinta Inn and Suites High Altitude Classic, hosted by Northern Arizona. USU is now 1-2 on the young season, while UCI improves to 2-1.
The Anteaters' Kate Berrini netted both goals in the match as the first goal was scored in the 34th minute of action and the second came in the 69th minute off an assist from Caty Cope. USU did outshot UCI 13-7, including 6-3 in shots on goal.
"We felt like we got a lot of good crosses and that's an area we have improved in," said Utah State head coach Heathers Cairns. "They dictated the style of play and set the tone, so we still have to keep working on sticking to our game plan."
The Aggies fired four shots in the first half and nine in the second, including four shots in the final 10 minutes of the match, but all of those attempts were saved by the Anteaters goalkeeper Danielle de Seriere who made six saves on the night. UCI had five shots in the first half and two in the second, as USU's junior goalkeeper Ali Griffin tallied one save in 90 minutes of action.
"We took some great shots but just need to finish them off and score." Cairns said.
"Right now we want to play every game better than we did the last," Cairns said. "I think we definitely improved but there's still room for more."
USU continues action in the High Altitude Classic on Sunday, Sept. 9 at 3 p.m. as they face off against host Northern Arizona.
