Danielle Taylor Named WAC Volleyball Player Of The Week

Nov. 12, 2007

LOGAN, Utah - Utah State volleyball player Danielle Taylor has been named the Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week it was announced by the league office Monday. Taylor was also named the America First Credit Union Utah State Student-Athlete of the Week, which was voted on by a state media panel, for the period ending on Sunday, Nov. 11.

Taylor becomes the third USU volleyball player this year to earn the weekly WAC award, joining Melissa Osterloh and Amanda Nielson. Overall, it is the fifth time that USU has had a player earn weekly WAC accolades in its three years in the conference.

Taylor, a 6-1 sophomore middle blocker from Springville, Utah (Springville HS) led Utah State to a 2-1 record last week as the Aggies lost to Idaho (3-0), and then defeated Nevada (3-1) and No. 10 Hawai'i (3-0) in Honolulu. Taylor began her week with six kills, four digs and seven blocks against Idaho. She then recorded six kills, five digs and three blocks against Nevada and ended her week by hitting a blistering .533 (11-3-15) against Hawai'i as she posted 11 kills and five blocks.

For the week, Taylor hit .276 and averaged 2.09 kills, 1.36 blocks and 0.91 digs per game. Hawai'i had won 97 straight WAC matches at home and was 169-2 (.988) in WAC play since joining the league for volleyball in 1996.

The win against Hawai'i for the Aggies is their first over a ranked opponent since they defeated then 24th-ranked UC Santa Barbara in five games on Sept. 15, 2005. The last time Utah State defeated a team ranked in the top 10 was on Sept. 12, 2000 when it beat then 10th-ranked BYU in three games in Logan. Utah State entered the match against Hawai'i having lost 20 straight contests to the Rainbow Wahine.

Utah State finished the regular season with a 17-12 record, including a third-place finish in WAC with an 11-5 league mark after being picked to finish in seventh-place in the preseason polls. After starting the season with a 2-6 record, USU has won 15 of its last 21 matches.

The Aggies will be the third-seed in the 2007 WAC Tournament held in Las Cruces, N.M., on Thursday, Nov. 15 through Saturday, Nov. 17 and play sixth-seeded San Jose State at 5 p.m. (MT) Thursday night.
