THIS SEASON: A 2009 senior co-captain, Kazu Miyahara is among USC's top returning breaststrokers whose hard work has paid off in continuous improvements each year. He's added the fly to his repertoire this season as he works to qualify for his first NCAA Championships.
2008: As a 2008 junior, Miyahara swam in three events at the 2008 Pac-10 Championships, taking 19th in the 100y breast (56.65), 21st in the 200y breast (2:02.59) and 28th in the 200y IM (1:52.70).
2007: For the second year in a row, Miyahara raced in three events at the 2007 Pac-10 Championships as a sophomore. He was a career-best 10th in the 200y breast (2:00.16), 11th in the 100y breast (56.25) and 28th in the 200y IM (1:55.10). His 1:59.60 in the 200y breast at the Georgia Invitational was USC's top time in the event on the season.
2006: Miyahara's 2006 freshman campaign was highlighted by a pair of consolation final appearances at the 2006 Pac-10 Championships. He was 13th in the 200y breast (2:01.66) and 14th in the 100y breast (56.42) ... He swam twice at the 2006 U.S. Spring Nationals, finishing ninth in the 200m breast ... His aforementioned results at the Pac-10 Championships were both personal bests.
HIGH SCHOOL: Miyahara was a two-time NISCA All-American as a junior and senior at Long Beach (Calif.) Poly High and earned the Top 16 award both years as well.
CLUB: Beach Swim Club.
PERSONAL: He was born on Feb. 1, 1987 ... He is majoring in biomedical engineering ... His father, Toshiyuki, was a Japanese Olympic water polo player and his mother, Akemi, swam collegiately.
