THIS SEASON: Roy Smiley, 6-foot-4 and 195 pounds, is in his first year with the Trojans as a junior guard after transferring from Southeastern Iowa College. A hard-nosed player, he brings an excellent perimeter game to the Trojans.
SAID BIBBY: "Roy is a competitive player who plays hard, brings a lot of toughness and will get an opportunity to contribute. He's more of a shooting guard or a small forward, but can play the point also. He's a scorer. He can shoot outside and drive. He's a guy you love because he plays so hard."
SOUTHEASTERN IOWA COLLEGE: Smiley earned NJCAA Region XI first team honors as a 2002 sophomore and a 2001 freshman at Southeastern Iowa College in West Burlington, Ia. ... As a sophomore, Smiley averaged 14.7 points, 3.5 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 1.8 steals ... As a freshman, he averaged 13.8 points, 3.4 rebounds and made 40.5% of his three-pointers. Prior to his sophomore season, Smiley was named a Street & Smith's Preseason All-America fourth teamer, the No. 2 small forward in the country by The Sporting News and the No. 5 wing guard by Lindy's.
HIGH SCHOOL: Smiley prepped at Garfield High in Seattle, Wash., where he averaged 19 points, 5.0 assists and 5.0 rebounds as a senior in 2000, leading his team to the Washington state championship.
