LOS ANGELES - Ryan Garko hit a grand slam in the first inning of Sunday's second game of a doubleheader as part of a 4-for-4, seven RBI game as the No. 9 Stanford Cardinal completed a Pac-10 Conference series sweep with two 8-3 victories against the USC Trojans. Garko added another two-run homer in his next at-bat, his 13th of the season. The Cardinal registered 38 runs during the series.

Stanford (31-14, 13-5) is now one and a half games ahead of second-place Arizona and Arizona State. USC is now 25-22 on the season and 9-9 in Pac-10 play.

The Cardinal used a 16-hit attack in the first game as freshman left-hander Mark Romanczuk improved to 9-0 with a complete game victory, allowing three runs (two earned) on three hits with six walks and five strikeouts. Sam Fuld went 4-for-5 with two RBI while Garko, Carlos Quentin, Danny Putnam, Jed Lowrie, John Mayberry, Jr., and Tobin Swope had two hits each.

Brian Bannister (5-5) took the loss after giving up five runs on 11 hits in five innings.

In the nightcap, USC freshman Bobby Paschal started the game by giving up three consecutive singles to Fuld, Jonny Ash and Quentin before Garko hit the grand slam to left for a 4-0 lead. Matt Manship (2-3) gave up three runs on eight hits with six walks and three strikeouts to earn the win for the Cardinal. Paschal (3-5) took the loss after allowing seven runs on seven hits with three walks and three strikeouts in five innings.

The Trojans stranded two runners on base in each of the first five innings in the nightcap. Michael Moon hit his fourth home run of the season with a two-run shot to right in the fourth inning.

USC will face Cal State Fullerton tomorrow in a 7 p.m. game at Edison International Field, home of the world champion Anaheim Angels. Both teams will use wood bats for Monday's game. The game will be broadcast on usctrojans.com.
