THIS YEAR: Senior Katherine Ellis has worked hard and established herself of one of USC's better distance runners.
2009: Set a PR and ran the sixth-fastest 3000m steeplechase in USC history of 11:07.26 to place second at the USC-UCLA Dual Meet on May 2. Also had a PR and the second-best 1500m race by a Trojan in 2009 when she clocked 4:36.88 to place fourth at the Northridge Invitational on March 14. Came in 20th in the 3000m SC at the Pac-10 Championships with a time of 11:54.16.
2008: She posted then PRs in the 1500m (4:38.29) and in the 3000m steeplechase (11:19.07). Her steeplechase time was set on May 10 at the Occidental Invitational and ranks as the seventh-best all-time by a Trojan female. Picked up three crucial points for USC in its win over UCLA at the Dual Meet on May 3 with a second-place finish in the 3000m SC with a time of 11:27.27.
2007: Specialized in the 3000m steeplechase as a freshman. She placed fifth at the USC-UCLA Dual Meet with a time of 11:49. Had a season-best time of 10:51.47 in the 3000m run at the Trojan Relays on March 3.
Cross country: 2009 -- Was USC's fourth finisher at the Pac-10s and fifth finisher at the NCAA West Regional. Finished ninth at the Vanguard Invitational to help USC win the team title. Was USC's top finisher at the UC Irvine Invitational. 2008 -- Was USC's top runner at the season-opening UC Irvine Invitational with a time of 19:01.80 to place 39th. Had a 6K time of 22:25.82 at the Pepperdine Invitational, then ran an 18:03 5K at the Roadrunner Invitational to help USC to its second consecutive win. Was USC's fifth scoring runner at the Pac-10s with a new 6K PR of 22:14.25 and and at the West Regional with a time of 22:39.55. 2007 -- Missed the first three meets of the season with a hamstring injury, but was one of USC's scoring runners in all four meets she competed. Ran at the Pac-10 and NCAA West Regional Championships. 2006 -- Made steady progress throughout the season and was one of USC's top five finishers in all six meets. Ran at the Pac-10 Championships at Stanford and placed 68th with a 6K personal best of 24:01.63.
High School: Ellis is a 2006 graduate of Columbia River High in Vancouver, Wash... Ran cross country and track and field at Columbia River High where her team won the 3A District 4 cross country championship twice...She was the 3A District 4 3200m champion four times and won the 1600m championship once...Her best cross country time as a senior was 18:53, her best 3200m time was 11:23 and best 1600m time was 5:20...Was a national merit scholar in high school.
Personal: Lists listening to music as a favorite pastime...Says Steve Prefontaine is her biggest sports hero because he was fast, had guts and a cool mustache...Chose USC for its great academics and the friendly people...Is an Electrical Engineering major at USC. Was named to the 2009 Pac-10 XC All-Academic First Team, after being named to the second team in 2007 and 2008.
