Volleyball Inks Four Student-Athletes During Early Signing Period

Dec. 11, 2006

Rhode Island volleyball Head Coach Bob Schneck has announced the signing of four student-athletes to National Letters of Intent during the early signing period.  Lindsay Lytle (Sebastopol, Calif.), Lauren McIntosh (Colorado Springs, Colo.), Amy Mellard (Overland Park, Kan) and Kayla Newberg (Deer Park, Wash.) will join the Rams' volleyball program in the fall of 2007.

Lindsay Lytle is a 6'0" setter/hitter for Coach Nancy Williams and the Analy High School Tigers.  She was an All-League and All-Empire performer this fall while leading her team to the Sonoma County League Championship and an NCS Division III Cection Championship.  In addition to her high school successes, Lytle also led her Empire VBC team to impressive finishes in the Volleyball Festival, placing 9th in the 16's division in 2005 and most recently earning a 6th place finish in the 17's division in 2006.

Lauren McIntosh is a 6'1" middle blocker and a four-year starter at Pine Creek High School.  McIntosh led her team in kills and was second in blocks while helping the Eagles to a 24-3 regular season record and a Colorado Springs Metro League Championship.  This season also marked the second-consecutive trip to the State Championships for McIntosh, with a 7th place finish in the 2006 5A Colorado State Tournament where she earned All-State recognition.  Lauren also has competed the last four club seasons for Bill and Judy Peer's Colorado Juniors club program where, in 2005, her team finished 11th in the 16 Open division and 9th in the 2006 17 Open division at the USA Junior National Championships.

Amy Mellard is a 6'0" outside hitter for coaches Kim Bogart & Brian Schenck at St. Thomas Aquinas in Overland Park, Kan.  Amy had .333 hitting efficiency this season and helped lead the Saints to the 2006 Kansas 5A State Championship while also finishing the season 30th in PrepVolleyball's High School Century Club rankings.  Academically, Mellard has been an honor roll member each year at Aquinas while also serving as a Senior Ambassador.  Amy also is active in both her school and community as a member of clubs like the Clean Team, STAPLES, and Ducks Unlimited. During the club season, she competes for the Asics Mavs volleyball club out of Kansas City where she has been competing at Junior Nationals since 2004 and most recently had a 10th place finish in the 17 Open division with her Mavs 17's team in 2006.

Kayla Newberg is a 6'2" middle blocker from Deer Park, Wash. and Riverside High School where she led her team to a Washington State tournament appearance for the first time in school history and finished the season ranked 7th in the 2006 Class 2A coaches poll.  Newberg is the leader for Coach Debbie Spray's Riverside Rams who finished third in the Great Northern League play and second in the District Tournament to earn their trip to the State Tournament. The Rams also captured 12th place, their highest finish, at the 2006 Crossover Classic.  Kayla competes at the club level during the off season and this past spring competed with Wade Benson's Spokane Splash juniors program at the Junior National Championships.
