Coaching Experience: Deb Smith enters her third season at the helm of the University of Rhode Island softball program. The Rams posted a 10-35 mark in 2007, but Smith came aboard knowing that the restoration of the Rams softball program to elite status wouldn't come overnight. Smith's impact was felt immediately in 2006, when the Rams finished 20-27 and battled for an Atlantic 10 playoff spot until the final days of the season. She arrived at Rhode Island following six years as the head coach at the University of Maine (1999-2004) and one year as an assistant coach at Bates College (2005). Handing the pitchers at Bates, Smith helped the Bobcats to a 12-10 record. Smith began her coaching career as an assistant at her alma mater, Maine, in 1994, working under Janet Anderson. While in Orono, Smith was responsible for coordinating recruiting and player evaluations, monitoring academic progress, and overseeing strength & conditioning. The Black Bears posted a 141-130-1 record during that span. She took over for Anderson in 1999 and, three years later, garnered America East Coach of the Year honors. In 2004, she guided the Black Bears to the America East Championship and the NCAA Regionals in 2004. A 1994 graduate of Maine, Smith holds a bachelor's degree in Health Fitness/Athletic Training with a concentration in Science. |
