2007 Cow Chip Bingo A Success

Dec. 13, 2007

KINGSTON, R.I. -- On Dec. 8, the Rhode Island Women's soccer team held their annual Cow Chip Bingo fundraiser. Seventy parties participated in this year's event, including community and family members and other supporters of the program.

Though there was a light covering of snow on the ground, the weather was quite pleasant. Members of the women's soccer team arrived for what was anticipated to be a long afternoon.

"Last year it took about 3 hours for the cow to get the job done, so we prepared this year for a long day," sophomore Amanda Thomas said. "We stopped for coffees and brought a football and were ready to just hang out and wait."

But Amanda and the rest of the team enjoyed the quickest round of cow chip bingo in Rhode Island Soccer history.

Promptly at 11 a.m., Gary Cottrell and his daughter Jessica arrived with their two Jersey calves, Erin and Emma Mary. The calves were released onto the grid, with junior Sarah Helldoerfer and freshman Taylor Kinsley leading them.

While these two players led the calves around the grid, others talked to onlookers, threw a football around, and gathered around the display of names and grid assignments of the participants.

At approximately 11:07, Emma Mary "determined the winner" in a record time. George and Karen Boisvert were celebrated as the lucky winners of the 2007 installment of Cow Chip Bingo as their square was "chosen."

"Congratulations to George and Karen Boisvert for taking home the $1000 prize," said head coach Zac Shaw. "Additional thanks to everyone who participated in this year's fundraiser. Your support for our program is extremely appreciated, as the proceeds of Cow Chip Bingo will go towards improving practice facilities for the women's soccer team as well as other improvements that will contribute to the overall success of our program."

Shaw added: "We'd also like to send a big thank you to Gary and Jessica Cottrell for providing the calves and to the grounds crew for putting in the time to draw our grid."
