PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The University of Rhode Island men's track and women's rowing teams lead the group of eight URI teams in the 2008 Atlantic 10 Coaches Polls. The Rams also boast one team picked to finish third (women's track) and two slated to finish fourth (baseball, men's golf).

Last season, the men's track team captured the Atlantic 10 championship while the women's rowing team finished second to Massachusetts. The track team opens its 2008 season this Saturday when they compete in the Sorlien Memorial Invitational while the rowers get underway March 29 when they host the Yankee Cup Regatta. Meanwhile, the women's track team, which opened its season last week by hosting the URI New Year Classic, was picked third after finishing third in the A-10 last season.

The baseball team was picked fourth behind Charlotte, Richmond and Xavier. In 2007, the Rams posted a 23-20 mark and earned the No. 4 seed in the A-10 tournament. The Rhode Island softball program, meanwhile, was picked 11th following a 10-35 season in 2007. The baseball team begins the 2008 season at Troy on February 22 while softball kicks off the 2008 campaign at the Red Desert Classic in St. George, Utah on Feb. 8 against Loyola.

The Rams' golf team, which finished seventh in 2007, was picked fourth. Led by GCAA Hall of Fame head coach Tom Drennan, the Rams qualified for the NCAA Regionals for the 16th consecutive season last spring. They open the 2008 season at the Roadrunner Invitational on February 18 in San Antonio, Texas.

The women's and men's tennis teams were picked ninth and 10th, respectively. Charlotte was picked to capture the men's crown while Richmond earned the nod on the women's side. The women open their season on February 24 at Hartford while the men host Temple on February 2.
