Box Score

Las Crusas, N.M. - The University of Rhode Island baseball team opened the 2003 campaign with a pair of losses against New Mexico State University on the road on Friday afternoon. The Aggies took the first game by a score of 14-0 and completed the sweep with an 18-6 win in the nightcap.

Christian Jackson tossed a complete game shutout in game one and the Aggies pounded out a season high 18 runs in game two as New Mexico State swept Rhode Island 14-0 and 18-6 to improve to 7-0 on the season.

The Aggies jumped out to a 8-0 after two innings in game two, but Rhode Island rallied for two unearned runs in the third and scored four runs in the fifth to cut the lead to 8-6.

But the Aggies bounced back with a vengeance in the bottom of the fifth and sixth. In the fifth, Hal Bisnett drew a bases loaded walk to drive in one run, Brad Ditter then drew a walk to plate another and Billy Becher singled to right to drive in two more to give the Aggies a 12-6 lead. In the sixth, senior center fielder Alex Borgo hit a towering grand slam home run to left field, his second of the game, to give the Aggies a 16-6 lead. Dustin Mote would score on a wild pitch later in the inning and Brandon Saunders drove in the final run on a run scoring double.

Junior right hander J.T. Severe improved to 3-0 on the season by hurling 4.2 innings and allowing six hits and four earned runs. Senior reliever Andrew Garretson earned his first save of the season by working the final 2.1 innings without allowing a run.

In game one, senior left hander Christian Jackson pitched a three hit shut out for the Aggies over seven innings in a 14-0 win.

Jackson earned his first career shutout and improved to 2-0 on the season by striking out five and walking only two

It was the third inning that was the turning point in the game as the Aggies opened up a five run lead. After three consecutive walks by pitcher Reid Willett, Beau Blacken double to left field to score three runs to put the Aggies on top 3-0. Jenkins then added two more as he blasted a home run to right field to bring in Blacken and put NMSU on top 5-0.

In the fourth inning the Aggies got back-to-back home runs by Becher and Blacken to put the Aggies up 8-0. Borgo walked to start the inning, stole second, and advanced to third on a balk, and was knocked in by Becher's third home run of the season. Blacken then stepped to the plate and hit a solo shot over the center field wall.

NMSU added three more runs in the fifth. Ryan Liermann doubled to left field to start the inning and was driven in on a double by Borgo. Borgo then scored on a double by Ditter. Becher then singled to center field to drive in Ditter, putting NMSU on top 11-0.

The Aggies tallied their third three run inning in a row in the sixth. Jenkins would start it for the Aggies on a double to right, and two outs later Saunders hit a three run home run to give the Aggies a 14-0 lead. It was Saunders' first home run as an Aggie, and the fourth home run of the game.

Rhode Island's Reid Willett (0-1) was credited with the loss giving up five runs on four hits in 2.1 innings pitched.

The two teams will finish the four-game series with a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 11:00 a.m.
