Hunter And Nyenhuis Named Carolina Performers Of The Week
Nov. 28, 2005 Ben Hunter scored four goals in a pair of NCAA Men's Soccer Tournament victories and Dani Nyenhuis led the UNC volleyball team to the ACC title and share honors as the Tar Heel Performers of the Week for November 21-27, 2005. Hunter provided all the offense needed in the Tar Heels' two NCAA Championship victories, as he scored twice against both Providence and Virginia to lead Carolina into the national quarterfinals for the fourth time in school history. In Sunday's win over the Cavaliers, Hunter connected on a free kick goal in the 61st minute and quickly followed with a tap-in goal in the 63rd minute to lift the Tar Heels to a 2-1 victory. Hunter provided a scoring burst in Tuesday's win over Providence, finding the back of the net in the 55th and 61st minutes. Hunter has scored Carolina's last seven goals since the start of the ACC Championship and has multi-goal efforts in three of the last four games. Hunter leads the Tar Heels with 31 points on 13 goals and five assists. Nyenhuis, a senior from St. Charles, Ill., had 50 kills, including a career-high 30 against Boston College, to lead the Carolina women's volleyball team to a weekend sweep that wrapped up the Atlantic Coast Conference title. The St. Charles, Ill., product had double-doubles in wins over BC and Maryland, including 20 kills and 14 digs in a three-game sweep of the Terrapins. Carolina needed to win in three games to win the league's tiebreaker, and, in doing so, secured both the ACC title and the automatic NCAA berth. The Tar Heels will host the College of Charleston Friday at 5 p.m. in a first round match at the Smith Center. Nyenhuis was also named the league's co-Player of the Week. OTHER NOMINEES: WRESTLING Ramirez led the Tar Heels at Saturday's Carolina Open with a first-place finish at 141 pounds. Ramirez's individual title marks his first as a Tar Heel and follows an impressive fourth-place finish at the East Stroudsburg Open last weekend. In the first two rounds of the Carolina Open, Ramirez won by technical fall and major decision. He then went on to defeat his opponents 7-0 and 1-0 in the semifinals and finals, respectively. Ramirez, a Durham native, now has a 12-3 record on the young season. MEN'S BASKETBALL Hansbrough had 18 points and eight rebounds in a win over Cleveland State and 15 points, 11 rebounds for his first career double-double in the win over UC Santa Barbara. WOMEN'S BASKETBALL Latta averaged 23.0 points per game and shot .583 percent from the field (.636 from three-point range) as UNC won both of its games at the Caribbean Classic in Mexico to improve to 4-0 on the season. She had a season-high 28 points in the Tar Heels' first win over a ranked team this season, 79-72 against No. 16 Arizona State on Friday. Including last Monday's game against Liberty, she averaged 22.0 points for the week and shot .588 from the field. On the season, Latta leads the team in scoring, averaging 21.5 points per
game on .587 shooting. She's shooting .609 (14-23) from three-point range.
