The North Carolina volleyball team is looking for its sixth consecutive win Wednesday night when it travels to Winston-Salem to take on Wake Forest at 7:30 p.m. The Tar Heels have swept five consecutive matches for the first time the 1999 season and have swept five straight Atlantic Coast Conference opponents for the first time in school history. Junior Brianna Eskola looks to make her own Carolina history against Wake Forest as she needs just 11 digs to set a new school record for digs in a career.
Sagula hits 560
Head Coach Joe Sagula captured win number 560 on Friday as his Heels beat Virginia 3-0. Sagula becomes the 24th active head coach in Division I to reach the 560-win plateau. Joining Sagula this year were Veronica Hammersmith of West Virginia and Glenn Nelson of Princeton. Sagula has posted 358 of those wins during his time at Carolina after spending nine years as the University of Pennsylvania coach.
Keeping the Streak Alive
Carolina will look to extend its incredible run of five consecutive sweeps on Wednesday night. The Tar Heels have won 15 consecutive games dating back to their heartbreaking loss to Georgia Tech in five games. Carolina has done it in all facets of the game outhitting their opponents .261-.092 during the stretch. Juniors Brianna Eskola and Stephanie Jansma have both improved their respective averages with Eskola digging 7.27 balls per game and Jansma is averaging 13.73 assists per game. Christine Vaughen, Megan Owens and Lauren Prussing are all averaging more than three kills per game with Prussing leading the charge with 4.00 per game.
Eskola set to move up ACC leaderboard
Brianna Eskola needs just 11 more digs to become the all-time leader at Carolina but the 2008 season could be an ACC record breaking one for the Columbia Heights, Minn. native. Eskola needs 15 digs to move into the ACC top 10 and is currently 441 shy of the the all-time ACC mark. The all-time mark is actually held by a former Demon Deacon, Trina Maso de Moya with 2,010.
Last time vs. Wake Forest
The Tar Heels swept the Demon Deacons in Chapel Hill with a multitude of kills from all the hitters. Middles Christine Vaughen and Heather Brooks led the way with 13 and 12 kills, while outside hitters Ingrid Hanson-Tuntland and Lauren Prussing reached the 10-kill mark. The Tar Heels now own a 31-11 all-time record against Wake Forest.
