Nov. 18, 2005

Box Score

CORAL GABLES, Fla. --- Senior libero Taylor Rayfield broke the school single-season record for digs, but the University of North Carolina volleyball team had its eight-match winning streak snapped by Miami, 28-30, 26-30, 30-25, 30-18, 15-2, Friday night at the Knight Sports Complex. Rayfield had 26 digs on the night, giving her 598 for the season, eclipsing the mark of 579 set by Caroline deRoeck in 2004.

Carolina (21-8, 16-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) used a solid offensive attack to take a 2-0 lead in the match. The Tar Heels hit .326 and .378 in the first two frames, winning 30-28 in the first and 30-26 in the second. Junior middle Amy Beaver provided the game-winning kill in game one after a tightly contest stanza. UNC weathered an early 10-point Miami lead in game two and got its final four points on kills by senior outside hitter Dani Nyenhuis, who finished with a team-high 25 kills.

Game three was the turning point, as Miami (14-13, 9-10 ACC) used a 9-4 run to break open a tie game and win 30-25. The Hurricanes then proceeded to dominate the remainder of the match, winning 45 of the final 65 points. The hosts never trailed in a 30-18 game four win and followed that by running away with the fifth game, 15-2. UM hit .341 in game four and a blistering .615 in game five, while the Tar Heels were unable to get into positive territory in either frame.

Carolina will now try to rebound in its final road match of the regular season, as the Tar Heels travel north to Tallahassee where they will face Florida State Sunday afternoon at 1.
