Tar Heels Downed By Yellow Jackets In Three

Oct. 13, 2006

Box Score

ATLANTA --- Noelle Dyk had her first career double-double but North Carolina could not overcome a strong offensive showing by Georgia Tech, and the Tar Heels fell in three games, 30-15, 30-27, 30-28, Friday night at O'Keefe Gymnasium. Dyk finished with 11 kills and 11 digs while Amy Beaver, a native of nearby Powder Springs, added 11 kills in her final trip to Atlanta.

Georgia Tech controlled game one from start to finish, rolling to a 30-15 win. The Yellow Jackets hit .400 for the frame and collected 16 kills on just 30 swings. After the score was tied early at 4, Tech ran off 10 of the next 12 points to pull away. Lindsey Gray led the way for the hosts with six kills on nine errorless attacks.

The second frame was a game of runs, with Carolina using a 7-2 spurt to build an early 8-4 lead before Tech responded with a quick 4-0 run to erase the deficit. With UNC holding a 14-12 lead, the Yellow Jackets put together the game's longest run, an 11-2 stretch that gave them a 23-16 advantage. The Tar Heels had one last rally in them, cutting the gap to two at 29-27 before an attack error ended it.

Carolina played its best volleyball of the match in game three but came up just short of extending the match. After weathering a near-perfect start by Georgia Tech that saw the Yellow Jackets collect seven kills on their first eight swings, the Tar Heels used a solid blocking presence to pull even.

UNC would tie the score for the first time at 11, and the score would be knotted 13 more times before the outcome was decided. Carolina led by two several times, the last coming at 24-22 on a block by Heather Brooks and Ingrid Hanson-Tuntland. But Tech would respond with back-to-back blocks of its own to even the game. The two teams traded points until the end, when Nikki Kaminskas clinched it with a kill.

Georgia Tech, led by 15 kills from Talisa Kellogg, hit .317 for the match. Brianna Eskola and Tech's Grey each had a match-high 18 digs.

The Tar Heels will now head up I-85 to face Clemson Saturday night at 6.
