Tar Heels Win Carolina Classic
Sept. 18, 1999 Chapel Hill, N.C. - The Tar Heels defeated the Providence Friars 3-0 (15-5, 15-12, 15-12) to complete the Carolina Classic at a perfect 3-0 and win the tournament. Shannon Smith was named MVP and Tori Seibert was named to the All-Tournament Team. During the tournament, Smith tallied 24 kills, 6 digs, and 15 blocks in seven games. Seibert totaled 24 kills, 19 digs and 11 blocks in nine games. Against Providence, Smith led Carolina with 12 kills and 10 blocks, while Casey Simpson and Asa Gustavsson both registered a double-double. Simpson finished with 11 kills and 11 digs and Gustavsson had ten kills and 13 digs. Seibert hit eight of 16 with no errors for a .500 percentage. Game one began well for the Tar Heels as they started 5-0. The Friars pulled within 7-5, before UNC finished the game on an 8-0 run for a 15-5 win. Game two was closer as it was tied at 12 until the Tar Heels won the last three points for the 15-12 win. UNC started the third game in the same manner as the first, on a 5-0 run. They extended their lead to 13-6 and the Friars tried to hold on, as they pulled within 14-12, however the Heels finished the match off and increased their record to 7-3. Although the Friars hit only .098, Sarah Katinger and Annie Cella both tallied 13 kills and Katinger added 12 digs. Carolina Classic Results
