Tar Heels Down American In Home Opener

The Tar Heels opened the Carolina Classic and their 1999 home season with a 3-1 (15-7, 15-9, 13-15, 17-15) win over American Friday at Carmichael Auditorium. Asa Gustavsson recorded 17 kills and hit a team-high .471, while Casey Simpson recorded a double-double with 16 kills and a game-high 14 digs. Freshman setter Eve Rackham tallied 60 assists for the Tar Heels.

Game one of the match was back and forth through the first 15 points until, with an 8-7 lead, Carolina ran off seven unanswered points to win the game 15-7. In game two, UNC opened on a 14-5 run before winning 15-9.

The Tar Heels seemed to have the match in hand, leading 2-0 and 13-10 in the third game. However, American took five consecutive points to win the third game and force a fourth. In the fourth, UNC held off American at game point (14-15) to win the next three points and take the match.

American was lead by Heather Wintermeyer who turned in a double-double with 19 kills and 12 digs and Judit Szckelyhidi who also had a double-double with 13 kills and 17 digs. The Tar Heels improved their record to 5-3, while American dropped to 5-1.
