Former Memphis assistant Travis Filar was added to the University of North Carolina volleyball coaching staff in May 2007. Filar replaced Lizzy Stemke who was hired as an assistant coach at the University of Nebraska.

Filar is a 2000 graduate of Furman University in Greenville, S.C., where he worked as an assistant coach and assistant camp director from July 2001 to June 2003. After leaving Furman, Filar was a volunteer assistant at the University of Kentucky for two seasons. While working with the Wildcats, Filar also coached boys and girls basketball at Trinity Christian Academy in Lexington, Ky.

"We are very excited to have Travis Filar join the Carolina volleyball program," Sagula said. "He is a very good coach that brings a broad range of experience from several Division I programs. He has extensive talent to train players, especially middle hitters and blockers, at a high level. In addition, he has the knowledge to manage the daily operations of our program in recruiting and scouting. Travis is one of the talented young coaches in our profession, and it is great to have him come back home to his roots in volleyball and coaching in North Carolina where he has many quality associations."

Filar joined the coaching staff at Memphis in 2005, where he primarily worked with the middle blockers and the team defensive systems. He also acted as the director of operations, handling travel, tape exchange and camp coordination. After finishing 16-16 in 2005, the Tigers came within one win of the Conference USA title in 2006, ended the season with a 27-8 record.

A native of Davidson, N.C., Filar got his start in coaching at Greenville (S.C.) High School, where he was an assistant boys soccer coach. Following his time at Greenville, Filar was the head junior varsity girls volleyball and boys basketball coach at Eastside High in Taylors, S.C.

Additionally, he has worked as the assistant volleyball clinician at the Fellowship of Christian Athletes Girls Sports Camp at Gardner-Webb University, as well as serving as a court coach at volleyball camps at Charlotte and Davidson. Prior to starting his coaching career, Filar played two seasons of club volleyball at Furman.

Filar is married to the former Natalie Muro, a four-year women's soccer letterwinner at Furman.
