UNC's Anundsen, Long Advance To NCAA Quarterfinals

May 26, 2006

STANFORD, CALIF. - North Carolina's Sara Anundsen and Jenna Long advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2006 NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championships Friday with a 6-2, 7-6 win over Texas A&M's Tiffany Clifford and Sarah Foster. The UNC duo, seeded in the 5-8 bracket, will face Gabriela Duch and Neyessa Etienne of South Florida in the quarterfinals Saturday at 12 noon P.D.T.

"I am very excited for Sara and Jenna to get to the quarters of the NCAA," said UNC head coach Brian Kalbas. "Yesterday they played a real solid match. Today it was kind of ugly because of the conditions. It was windy and made things kind of difficult. But they hung in there and played aggressively and eally earned the victory."

After winning the first set UNC was broken in the opening game of the second set. The match got to 3-2 when the Tar Heels broke back to even things at 3-3. UNC had two match points in the 10th game of the set but A&M held serve and it eventually went to a tiebreaker. UNC went up 4-2 when the teams changed sides only to see the Aggies even the score at 4-4. UNC then won the last three points of the break to claim the win.
