Tar Heels Advance To NCAA Doubles Sweet Sixteen
May 24, 2005 ATHENS, Ga. - Although North Carolina women's tennis seniors Kendall Cline and Aniela Mojzis each fell in the NCAA singles competition, the two advanced to the NCAA round of 16 in doubles play after a first-round win Tuesday afternoon on Henry Feild courts at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. The fifth-ranked tandem will face 24th-ranked Olga Borisova and Marianna Yuferova of VCU on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. Cline and Mojzis, who have already earned All-America honors this season, defeated Mississippi's Chloe Carlotti and Virginia Tomatis 7-6(7), 7-5 Tuesday to advance to the Sweet Sixteen. Carlotti and Tomatis are ranked 23rd in the ITA doubles poll. With the win, Cline and Mojzis improve to 32-8 overall and 23-7 in dual-match play. "It was not the prettiest tennis or the best conditions, but that went for both sides," Cline said after the doubles match. "We just tried to play one point at a time. Right now the seeding really just means experience and opportunity. It comes down to who has played tougher teams to get the higher rank and higher seed. But you cannot underestimate anyone; every team is tough." "We have been playing pretty well coming into today," added Mojzis. "Their game was good for these conditions, and we felt some pressure as the seeded team, but we played well today. I think the seeding will come into play later in the tournament. In the early rounds the higher seeds are vulnerable. The experience comes out in the later rounds." In singles action, 23rd-ranked Zuzana Zemenova of Baylor defeated Mojzis, ranked 41st, 6-1, 7-6(0). Cline, ranked 24th, fell to UCLA's Riza Zalameda, ranked 26th, 7-6(7), 6-0.
