Cline, Mojzis Receive ITA National Awards

ATHENS, Ga. - The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) announced its national award winners for NCAA Division I women's tennis Sunday night during a banquet at the University of Georgia's Rankin Smith Academic Center. North Carolina seniors Kendall Cline and Aniela Mojzis, two of the most decorated players in UNC's history, were recipients of national awards.

Cline, a native of Dallas, Texas, was honored with the ITA/Cissie Leary Sportsmanship Award. This award is presented to an individual who displays inspiring commitment and dedication to her team, which has enhanced her team's performance and exemplified the spirit of college tennis. Cline, who also overcame a series of personal tragedies as a teenager, was No. 6 in the UNC singles lineup as a freshman in 2002, but has improved to the point where she has been ranked in the top 25 in the ITA's national singles rankings this season (and in the top 10 in doubles) and has posted a . In February she received the USTA Sportsmanship Award.

Mojzis, a Cape Town, South Africa native, received the ITA/Arthur Ashe Award for Leadership and Sportsmanship. This award goes to goes to a player who has exhibited outstanding sportsmanship and leadership as well as scholastic, extracurricular and tennis achievements. Mojzis, a three-time All-America, has been active in a YMCA Big Buddy program, which helps less fortunate children in the Chapel Hill area. Mojzis has also been active in fund raising for various organizations that benefit African children in need. She will be honored this August in a special ceremony at New York's Central Park.

The ITA names the National Player of the Year and National Doubles Team of the Year in June.

Cline and Mojzis are competing both in the NCAA singles and doubles tournament, which begins Monday. Each plays Monday afternoon at 3 p.m. in singles at Dan Magill Tennis Complex. Together, the fifth-ranked tandem will begin doubles play on Tuesday, May 24.
