Pinchbeck Moves Ahead To Quarterfinals

May 22, 2002

Stanford, Calif. ----- The University of North Carolina's Kate Pinchbeck advanced to the quarterfinals of the individual NCAA Women's Tennis Championships on Wednesday, with a 7-5, 6-3 upset victory over No. 8 seed Lauren Kalvaria of Stanford.

"I'm still shaking," an excited Pinchbeck said several minutes after the match. "I played really well, but I still can't believe I won. It's the biggest individual accomplishment for me in college. On paper I wasn't expected to win, but I just went out there and smacked it around and it went my way."

Pinchbeck, ranked 14th in the country entering the tournament, improved to 30-2 overall and will face Wake Forest's Bea Bielik in the quarterfinals on Thursday at 11 a.m. Bielik is the No. 1 seed in the tournament.
