NCAA Women's Tennis Singles Championships Suspended By Rain
May 20, 2002 STANFORD, Calif. - The opening day of the 2002 NCAA Women's Tennis Singles Championship was halted by rain on Monday at the Taube Tennis Center after only 42 minutes of competition. Nine of the 32 first round singles matches began at 10:00 a.m. Pacific Time, but were halted by rain at 10:42 a.m. The competition was halted for the day at 1:56 p.m. after a 3-hour, 14-minute rain delay. The nine singles matches that were suspended will begin on Tuesday at 9:00 a.m. Pacific Time. The entire first and second rounds are scheduled to be completed on Tuesday. North Carolina's Kate Pinchbeck trails in her match against Baylor's Katja Kovac, 6-3, 2-1. Julie Rotondi's match against Washington's Darija Klaic never began because of the weather. Marlene Mejia's match against Penn's Alice Pirsu was also postponed. The NCAA Doubles Championship, which was scheduled to begin on Tuesday, will now start on Wednesday.
