Tar Heels Advance In NCAA Women's Tennis Tournament

Gainesville, Fla. ----- All three University of North Carolina women's tennis players competing in the NCAA singles championship - Kate Pinchbeck, Marlene Mejia, Aniela Mojzis - won their first round matches on Monday. North Carolina is the only school represented with three players in the second round. No other school has more than two.

"To have three players advance in the NCAA is a great accomplishment for our program," said UNC head coach Jen Callen. "I was pleased with the way Aniela, Kate and Marlene played today, especially with the conditions. It was very hot, but they played tough."

Pinchbeck, ranked 13th in the country, defeated Florida's Julia Scaringe, 6-2, 3-6, 7-5. She will face No. 4 seed Agata Cioroch of Georgia in the second round at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday. Last season, Pinchbeck advanced to the quarterfinals of the singles tournament and earned All-America honors.

Mejia defeated Duke's Saras Arasu, 6-1, 7-6 (6) and advanced to play Mira Radu of Mississippi in the next round at 9 a.m.

Mojzis, who will also play with teammate Kendall Cline in the doubles championship, beat Kentucky's Nathalie Roels for the second time this year, 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (5).

"Aniela played a great third set," said Callen. "Every point was a battle and I was proud of the way she hung in there and competed."

Mojzis will meet No. 8 seed Jewel Peterson of Southern California in the second round at 9 a.m. and will then play in the doubles competition at 12:30 p.m.
