Carolina (22-9) advanced to the round of 16 after defeating Richmond 4-0 and Duke 4-0 in the first and second rounds, respectively. For the fourth straight year, Carolina was one of 16 schools to host a regional.

UNC has advanced to the round of 16 three times in the last four years. Making its seventh NCAA tournament appearance, Carolina is 10-6 in NCAA play. Its best finish was in 2002, when UNC reached the quarterfinals. Carolina fell to Stanford 4-1.

In his 14 years of coaching, Head Coach Brian Kalbas is 17-9 in NCAA play in his careers at North Carolina and William & Mary. This marks the sixth time Kalbas has taken his team to the round of 16.

Both matches were in Nashville, Tenn., as Vanderbilt also hosted a regional. The Commodores finished the SEC 9-2 and in the SEC Tournament, fell to Florida 4-1 in the championship match.
