The 2004 Season In Review

In his inaugural year, Kalbas and the team adjusted quickly to each other in the fall tournaments. Then in the spring, the ninth-ranked team started out with a 12-1 record. By the end of the nine-match win streak, the Tar Heels had moved up to fifth in the nation with wins over #64 Wisconsin, #12 Harvard, #12 Kentucky, #23 Tennessee, #19 Texas A&M, #32 William & Mary, #72 Loyola Marymount and with an upset win over #7 Northwestern. The Tar Heels, after playing ranked teams in 11 of its last 12 matches, then lost to #3 Florida, which started a four-match skid, the only losing streak of the season for Carolina. UNC lost to a #5 Duke, #33 Wake Forest and #35 Florida State in six days. The Tar Heels turned it around with a non-conference win over #23 Notre Dame, followed by North Carolina's four conference wins over NC State, #65 Virginia, #68 Maryland and #39 Georgia Tech. In its last regular-season match, UNC lost to #16 Clemson. In the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament, a #14 Carolina played as the four seed and beat #39 Georgia Tech in a quarterfinal match 4-1. In the semifinal match the next day, Carolina lost to eventual 2004 champion, #9 Clemson, 4-1.

* North Carolina is one of three ACC Schools that has been ranked in the ITA Top 25 all season. The Tar Heels have been ranked as high as No. 5, which they held for two weeks, and are now ranked No. 15 by the ITA. The Tar Heels have been ranked in the top 15 of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings all season.

* Two Tar Heels have been named ACC Performer of the Week (in back-to-back weeks)

* Fox Sports Net featured Mojzis on ACC Live on April 12 in Jenn Hildreth's "Trip Around the Triangle" segment.

* The Tar Heels have beaten six top-25 teams this season

* Three of the Tar Heels seven losses have been by a score of 4-3. The Tar Heels have swept seven teams.

* The Tar Heels have only lost once after winning the doubles point (17-1). UNC has only won once when losing the doubles point (1-6).

* Mojzis has been in the ITA singles poll throughout the season. The highest ranking she has earned is #16. She is currently ranked #19 and is 12-11 against other ranked opponents.

* Other Tar Heels who have been ranked in the singles polls throughout the season: Kendall Cline at #81, Sara Anundsen at #65, and Caitlin Collins at #98.

* Mojzis and Kendall Cline are one of only five doubles teams in the ACC to be ranked in every ITA poll this season. They are at their highest of the season, ranked 21st nationally.

* Juniors Kendall Cline and Aniela Mojzis were named to the 2004 All-ACC team. Mojzis was named to the team for the third consecutive time while Cline is a second time honoree.

* Mojzis and Cline will play in the individual tournament on May 24-29 as an at-large doubles team in the South region. Mojzis also recieved an at-large bid for singles in the South.

Tournament notes

* This is the first meeting between the Tar Heels and the Winthrop Eagles. UNC's record against Tennessee is 12-11, including a 4-3 win earlier this season. Carolina is 10-1 versus Wisconsin with a 5-2 win this season.

* This is the Tar Heels' sixth appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Carolina's first appearance was in 1999 and it has recieved a bid each year since.

* The best finish for the Tar Heels in the Tournament was in 2002 when they reached the quarter finals. UNC, ranked #5 lost to #3 Stanford 4-1.

* This is the third year in a row UNC has hosted a regional. The Tar Heels are 4-0 in the NCAA Tournament when playing at home.

No. 1 Aniela Mojzis (#21)...the junior from Cape Town, South Africa, played at the top spot all season for the Tar Heels...posted a 25-14 overall record, 15-10 in dual play and 5-3 in the ACC...sits at 12-11 against ranked opponents...has been ranked all season in the ITA poll as high as 16th and currently 21st...had upset wins over a #27 Tammy Encina of Tennessee, a #21 Alice Barnes of Stanford, a #23 Aibika Kalasarieva of Kentucky, a #10 Alicia Salas of Notre Dame and a #8 Julie Coin of Clemson...was named ACC Performer of the Week on February 16, 2004...named to the 2004 ACC All-Conference Team...career records of 68-26 overall, 18-6 in the ACC.

No. 2 Lee Bairos...the senior from Sarasota, Fla., has consistently played at the two seed...finished regular season play at 15-19 overall, 10-13 in dual play and 1-6 in the ACC...had upset wins over a #36 Jessica Rush of Northwestern, #89 Carine Vermeulen of USC...career records of 66-53 and 17-14 in the ACC...named UNC's 2004 Most Improved Player.

No. 3 Caitlin Collins...the freshman from Lawrence, Kan., has played mainly the No. 3 and 4 seeds with a win at both the two and five seeds...is a 15-17 overall, 10-13 in dual play and 2-6 in the ACC...upset #37 Manon Kruse of Middle Tennessee State...was ranked #98 by the ITA from January 13 to February 23, 2004.

No. 4 Kendall Cline...the junior from Dallas, Texas, has played seeds three through five for UNC with one win at the two seed...was ranked #99 in the fall preseason poll...ranked #81 from March 9 to March 22, 2004...posted a regular season record of 20-14 overall, 15-8 in dual play and 3-4 in the ACC...named to the 2004 ACC All-Conference Team...career record of 52-30 overall and 14-8 in the ACC.

No. 5 Sara Anundsen...the freshman from Littleton, Colo., started the fall with a seven-match winning streak...won Flight 3 at the St. Mary's Fall Classic...won Flight 4 at the Furman Invitational...went 3-0 in singles for UNC at the USTA/ITA National Women's Team Indoor Championship...played the three through five seeds for UNC in dual play...has a team-high 28 wins (28-9) overall, 20-6 in dual play and 5-3 in the ACC...was ranked #65 from January 13 to February 23, 2004...voted UNC's 2004 Most Valuable Player by her teammates.

No. 6 Kendrick Bunn...the senior from Wilson, N.C., played the five and six seeds for the Tar Heels this year...went 11-6 overall, 10-4 in dual play and 2-2 in the ACC...had a seven-match winning streak at the beginning of UNC's dual match play...named ACC Performer of the Week for February 9, 2004...career record of 51-40 and 8-8 in the ACC...given UNC's 2004 Best Attitude award with teammate Brooke Sagalowsky.

No. 7 Jenna Long...the freshman from Fremont, Calif., played the five and six seeds for Carolina posting an impresive 14-5 dual match play record...also went 5-1 in the ACC and 19-10 overall...upset #45 Julia Smith of Duke in the fall Southeast Regional tournament...had a six-match win streak in the spring which included five straight ACC wins.

No. 8 Tanja Markovic...the sophomore from Auckland, New Zealand, has seen limited play for the Tar Heels this year...she has gone 3-0 at the six seed and 3-4 in tournament play for a total 6-4 record.

No. 1 Mojzis/Cline (19th) ...the junior pair played at the top spot for North Carolina all season...ranked #4 nationally in the preseason fall poll...began the spring at #41 and has climbed since to #19...are 25-10 overall, the most doubles wins for a Tar Heel tandem ever...18-6 in dual play and 7-1 in the ACC...last fall, won Flight 1 doubles at St. Mary's Fall Classic...upset the #1 team in the nation, Cristelle Grier and Jessica Rush of Northwestern...upset #21 Megan Muth and Amy Wei of William and Mary...only ACC loss came to Florida State's Roxanne Clarke and Mihaela Moldovan in a tiebreak...ranked as high as #11 during their freshmen preseason and #7 during sophomore season...career record together of 59-22 overall and 19-4 in the ACC.

No. 2 Bairos/Bunn...senior pair has been Carolina's two seed as of late...are 9-2 overall and in dual play and are 4-1 in the ACC.
