UNC Women's Tennis To Host NCAA First and Second Rounds

May 4, 2005

INDIANAPOLIS, IND. - For the second straight year, the 13th-ranked North Carolina women's tennis team will host one of 16 regionals in the 2005 NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championship. The Tar Heels (20-9) are the 13th seed among the 64 teams chosen. Carolina is the top-seeded team in its regional and will face Richmond (14-9) in the first round. In the other first-round match, Duke (15-10) will travel back to Chapel Hill, but this time to take on Michigan (14-11).

First- and second-round competition will be conducted May 13-14 at Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. On Friday, May 13, Carolina will play Richmond at 10 a.m., and Duke and Michigan will face-off at 2 p.m.

The winners of the two Friday matches will play each other at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 14. Ticket prices for adults are $5 and $3 for students. Tickets will be available at the entrance of the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center, which is located adjacent to the Friday Center.

The winner of each regional site advances to the championships at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Georgia, hosted by the University of Georgia. The team championship will be held May 19-22.

The complete list of teams and sites can be found at www.ncaasports.com.

This will mark UNC's seventh straight appearance in the NCAA tournament. Last year in Chapel Hill, Carolina defeated Winthrop 4-0 in the first round, but fell to Tennessee 4-3 in the second round. Carolina's all-time record against Richmond is 14-2.

UNC is coming off a strong showing at the ACC Tournament April 22 and 23. The Tar Heels cruised past Maryland 4-0 in the quarterfinals. For the second time in six days, Carolina met Georgia Tech, but couldn't stave off the 4-2 Yellow Jacket victory in the semifinals.

Currently, in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings, Tar Heel seniors Kendall Cline and Aniela Mojzis are ranked in the top 50. Cline is No. 24 and Mojzis is No. 41. In doubles, the pair is ranked fifth. Sophomores Sara Anundsen and Jenna Long are ranked No. 40.
