Collins and Long Earn All-ACC Honors
April 19, 2006 GREENSBORO, N.C. - Announcing on Wednesday the All-Conference honorees for the 2006 women's tennis season, the Atlantic Coast Conference named two Tar Heels to the team. Juniors Caitlin Collins and Jenna Long both received the honor for North Carolina. Duke and Miami each placed three student-athletes on the team, while North Carolina and Georgia Tech each placed two on the team. Rounding out with one player each were Clemson, NC State, Virginia, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest. Jenna Long, a native of Fremont, Calif., has been named to the team two years in a row. In 2005, Long and seniors, Kendall Cline and Aniela Mojzis represented the Tar Heels on the team. She is currently ranked No. 34 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association and posts an overall 28-11 record, 17-9 dual record and a 6-5 ACC record in singles. Long is also ranked fifth in the nation with Sara Anundsen in doubles. The tandem posts a 9-2 ACC record, 18-5 dual record and 31-5 overall record. In November, Anundsen and Long were the first Tar Heel duo in school history to compete in the finals of the ITA National Indoors. The North Carolina pair fell to Stanford's Alice Barnes and Anne Yelsey, a tandem then ranked sixth in the nation, 8-5. Fellow junior Caitlin Collins earns her first All-ACC selection honor after posting an outstanding season thus far for Carolina. Collins is 7-4 in the ACC, 15-11 in dual-match play and 24-15 overall. She is currently ranked 64th in the nation in singles. Partnered with senior Tanja Markovic, the pair posts a 9-4 ACC record and 14-7 overall season record. Collins clinched the 4-3 upset over No. 2 Florida on February 26 with a win over then fifth-ranked singles player Diana Srebrovic. Collins clinched the match in straight set tie-breaks, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (7-5). North Carolina heads into the ACC Tournament with a 23-5 record and 8-3 in the ACC. Competition begins Thursday, April 20, at 9 a.m. with No. 5 North Carolina facing off against Boston College.
