Setting the Scene The Tar Heels are the third seed in the tournament after finishing the regular season 15-7 overall and 6-2 in the ACC. In two seasons, North Carolina head coach Jen Callen has guided the Tar Heels to 40 overall wins and back-to-back 7-1 and 6-2 finishes in the ACC. That is the best two-year run in school history since the 1986 (5-2) and 1987 (7-0) seasons. Carolina's only two conference losses came at the hands of fifth-ranked and No.1-seed Duke in the conference opener and to 17th-ranked and No. 2-seed Clemson in its final regular season conference match. Duke defeated the Tar Heels 6-1, while the Tigers edged out Carolina 4-3. Kate Pinchbeck, Carolina's No. 1 singles player did not compete in singles against Clemson due to sickness.
The Tar Heels in First Round Action Earlier this season, Carolina defeated Florida State 6-1 at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center in Chapel Hill. The Seminoles sole point in the match came from a victory at flight six singles, where Amberly Tantee edged out Tanja Markovic 7-6 (1), 7-6 (3). The Tar Heels claimed the remaining five singles matches in straight sets and took all three doubles matches as well. At flight one singles, Kate Pinchbeck defeated Dumitrescu 6-3, 6-0. Marlene Mejia defeated Moldovan 7-6 (6), 6-4 at flight two, while Aniela Mojzis defeated Christina Denny at flight three 6-2, 6-2. Kendall Cline and Lee Bairos also encountered little trouble at flights five and six. Cline defeated Daniela Gheorghe 6-4, 6-2 and Bairos overpowered Brooke Cordell 6-0, 6-4. In doubles action, Mojzis and Cline defeated Dumitrescu and Moldovan 8-6, Mejia and Bairos defeated Tantee and Gheorghe 8-6 and Pinchbeck and Markovic won over Cordell and Denny 9-7. Should Carolina beat Florida State this time around, the Tar Heels would face either Clemson, Saturday at 1 p.m. The finals of the ACC Championships will be held Sunday, April 20 at 11 a.m.
Carolina Looks To Defend Title The Tar Heels scored the first point with doubles victories at flights two and three. Duke scored three singles wins and Carolina's Julie Rotondi and Aniela Mojzis won their singles matches to set up the No. 2 singles match between Kate Pinchbeck and Duke's Amanda Johnson as the clincher. Pinchbeck won the third set, 6-0 to seal the victory and earn tournament MVP honors. The victory ended Duke's 14-year reign as champions. Carolina has won a total of five ACC titles.
