No. 13 Tar Heels Battle No. 16 Duke Wednesday In Final Home Contest

April 12, 2005

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - In its final home match of the season, the North Carolina women's tennis team will face rival Duke on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. Senior All-Americas Kendall Cline and Aniela Mojzis will look to lead the Tar Heels to an undefeated home season.

In the Intercollegiate Tennis Association team rankings released Tuesday, North Carolina (18-6, 6-1 ACC) moved up one spot to No. 13 after cruising past Maryland and Virginia in weekend play. Carolina swept #61 Maryland on Saturday and defeated the Cavaliers 6-1 on Sunday.

Duke (13-7, 4-3 ACC) fell to No. 16 after falling to Maryland 4-3 on Sunday in Durham, N.C.

Duke leads the series 34-26. Duke won last year's battle 7-0 in Durham. The last time Carolina defeated Duke was April 21, 2002 in the ACC Championship match. UNC edged the Blue Devils 4-3 for its first victory over Duke since 1987.

The winner of Wednesday's match will receive one point towards the Carlyle Cup, which is a year-long competition between North Carolina and Duke sponsored by Carlyle & Co., of Greensboro, N.C.
