No. 14 UNC Women's Tennis Downs Virginia 6-1

April 10, 2005

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The 14th-ranked Carolina women's tennis team improved its Atlantic Coast Conference record to 6-1 as it captured a 6-1 victory over an unyielding Virginia team Sunday afternoon at Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. UNC has won its last six matches and moves to 18-6 on the season. Carolina remains undefeated at home after 13 contests on its own turf. The Cavaliers fall to 5-12, 1-6 in the ACC.

The Tar Heels now look to Wednesday, when they host their final home match of the season against 12th-ranked Duke. The match begins at 6 p.m. and will be the final for seniors and All-Americas Kendall Cline and Aniela Mojzis.

Sophomore Sara Anundsen clinched the match at the No. 4 spot, cruising 6-3, 6-3 to win her fifth straight match. The Littleton, Colo., native is 14-5 in dual-match play and 22-9 overall.

UNC sophomore Jenna Long, who battled in the final match of the day, came away with a 7-5, 6-7(4), 7-6(3) victory over Virginia's Rachel DelPriore at No. 3. Long is on a nine-match winning streak, the longest of any player on the team. The Fremont, Calif., native is 33-5 on the season.

Caitlin Collins came back from being down 6-7 in the first set to win her match at No. 5. The sophomore cruised in the final two sets, winning 6-7, 6-1, 6-0.

In other singles action, 31st-ranked Mojzis handled Kristen James at the No. 1 spot, winning 6-1, 6-1. At No. 2, 22nd-ranked Cline defeated the Cavaliers' Douglas Wink 6-4, 6-3.

Carolina won the doubles point with 8-0 wins at both the No. 2 and 3 spots. The 24th-ranked tandem of Anundsen and Long are just one win shy of capturing their 30th win together this season. Collins and Tanja Markovic won at the No. 3 spot for their fourth win together.

The sixth-ranked duo of Cline and Mojzis fell 8-4 to an unrelenting Virginia team of Wink and DelPriore at No. 1. The loss is only the sixth for the Tar Heel senior team.
