CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - For the sixth time this season, the University of North Carolina women's tennis team swept its opponent as Carolina defeated NC State 7-0 Wednesday at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. With the win, the 12th-ranked Tar Heels move to 15-6 overall and 1-3 in Atlantic Coast Conference play. North Carolina rolled in doubles play as all three tandems grabbed victories and, together, dropped a total of only four games. At the No. 1 seed, Tar Heel juniors Aniela Mojzis and Kendall Cline, ranked 23rd in the national doubles polls, defeated the Wolfpack's Barbara Orlay and Kristin Lam 8-1. Mojzis and Cline are now 13-5 in dual match play, and four of those five losses were decided by tie-breaks. The senior tandem of Lee Bairos and Kendrick Bunn took an 8-2 win over Nandita Chandrasekar and Danielle Stadelmann at the No. 2 doubles spot. Bairos and Bunn have played in only three dual matches together, but are undefeated as a team. The freshmen pair of Sara Anundsen and Jenna Long clinched the doubles point after cruising past NC State's Jennifer Jassawalla and Agustina Arechevaleta 8-1. Anundsen and Long improve to 7-2 in dual match play together. In singles play, 29th-ranked Mojzis defeated Orlay in three sets, 3-6, 6-5, 1-0(6). Mojzis has won her last three matches, including an upset over #10Alicia Salas of Notre Dame on Sunday.
At the other five seeds, all Tar Heels took two-set victories. Freshman Caitlin Collins played at the No. 2 seed for the first time in dual match play of her career and defeated NC State's Lam 6-0, 7-6. Cline won her match at the No. 3 spot, beating Chandrasekar 6-1, 6-2. Cline is now 13-5 in singles dual match play.
At the No. 4 seed, Anundsen dominated in her match against Jassawalla, taking a 6-3, 6-1 win. Long took a 7-6, 6-1 victory over Vania Apodaca at the No. 5 seed. Bunn, playing at the No. 6 position, cruised past Arechavaleta, 6-2, 6-3, improving her singles dual match record to 9-3. Next up for the Tar Heels is a road trip up north for their last two away matches of the season. UNC takes on #65 Virginia on Saturday, April 3, at 10 a.m. in Charlottesville, Va. The Tar Heels then face #68 Maryland in College Park, Md., at 11 a.m on Sunday, April 4.
