Three Tar Heels Earn ACC Honors

May 8, 2003

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Senior centerfielder Tiffany Tolleson (Winter Haven, Fla.) and freshman first baseman Jaclyn Holden (Santa Clarita, Calif.) were named to the 2003 All-ACC team tonight at the Softball Atlantic Coast Conference Banquet. Freshman pitcher Crystal Cox (Harrisburg, N.C.) grabbed ACC Rookie of the Year honors to become the third Tar Heel to collect hardware on the evening.

Tolleson led UNC with a .420 batting average and ranked 27th in the NCAA. She led the ACC with 43 stolen bases and has 193 in her career, three shy of the Division I record of 196. Tolleson is UNC's all-time leader with a .415 career batting average.

Holden had one of the most impressive freshman seasons for Carolina, setting the school record with 23 doubles. She led the ACC with 0.40 doubles per game (2nd in the NCAA), slugging percentage (.768) and finished second in the league with 12 home runs and 47 RBIs. Holden set a UNC and conference record with five hits versus North Carolina A&T on March 25.

Cox led the Heels on the mound and finished 10th in the NCAA with a 0.86 ERA (2nd in the ACC). She finished with 24 wins (2nd most in school history) and three saves. Her 239 strikeouts were second most in UNC history and she held opposing hitters to a .151 batting average.

Carolina will face Georgia Tech in the first quarterfinal game of the ACC Tournmanet tomorrow at 5 p.m. on the Seminole Softball Complex. The Tar Heel games can be followed on GameTracker at TarHeelBlue.com.
