O'Reilly, Tarpley Named ESPN The Magazine Academic All-Americas
Nov. 28, 2005 CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Lindsay Tarpley and Heather O'Reilly, a pair of gold medalists on the 2004 United States Olympic Women's Soccer Team and on-field All-Americas at the University of North Carolina, were named Monday to the 2005 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Teams for women's soccer. The teams are voted on by a committee of the College Sports Information Directors of America. O'Reilly was named to the second team and Tarpley to the third team. A total of three teams were named overall with one goalkeeper, four defenders, three midfielders and three forwards named on each team. Both gifted soccer players, O'Reilly and Tarpley were recognized for their excellence in the classroom. The team is chosen based on a combination of athletic accomplishments, overall grade point average and academic major. A minimum of a 3.2 grade point average is required to make the team. Both players are forwards. O'Reilly made the second team. The East Brunswick, N.J. native has a 3.22 grade point average in education. Tarpley, from Kalamazoo, Mich., was named third team with a 3.25 grade point average.
A total of 33 players were named to the three teams. The minimum GPA for any player who earned first team status was a 3.68 on a 4.0 scale.
