Carolina Women's Soccer Team Visits White House
July 11, 2007 WASHINGTON, D.C. - One June 18, the Tar Heel women's soccer completed the last leg of their 2006 NCAA Championship victory tour when they traveled to Washington D.C. to take part in Champions' Day at the White House. Along with 27 other NCAA Championship teams from across the country, the Heels had the chance to meet the president while posing for a team picture in the East Room.
Jessica Maxwell presented the president with a pair of custom made cowboy boots, each adorned with an interlocking NC, which George W. Bush called "a very thoughtful gift." Senior Jennifer Perkins informed Bush that he looked much better in person, which earned her a chuckle and a kiss on the cheek. After the team photo, the Tar Heels joined the other teams on the South Lawn for refreshments and a short speech in which Bush congratulated them for their 19th national Championship in 26 years. The ceremony did not last long and the ladies were relieved to retreat from the oppressive heat, but they were determined to accept the invitation to return next year to celebrate another national championship.
