Three Tar Heels Named To Verizon Academic All-Region Teams

May 16, 2002

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Three members of University of North Carolina athletic teams were named Thursday to the 2002 Verizon Academic All-District III Men's and Women's At-Large Academic All-America Teams. Those chosen include women's lacrosse player Porter Wilkinson (Charlottesville, Va.), men's swimmer Stephen Mohr (Mequon, Wis.) and women's swimmer Katie Hathaway (Matthews, N.C.).

The teams are sponsored by Verizon and and voted on the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Wilkinson and Mohr were named first team All-District and Hathaway second team. District III is made up of all Division I schools in Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida. The at-large team is made up of athletes in all NCAA sports other than baseball, football, basketball, soccer and track which have their own teams. Members of the first team are now eligible for the national team, which will be announced in early June.

Wilkinson, a two-time All-America and three-time All-ACC selection, has a 3.90 grade point average while majoring in political science. She has led the Tar Heels into the NCAA Final Four as Carolina will play Princeton Friday night in the semifinals at Loyola College in Baltimore.

Mohr is a two-time NCAA qualifier. He has a 3.945 with a major in economics. Hathaway, a four-time All-America and the 2002 Atlantic Coast Conference champion in the 100- and 200-yard breaststrokes, has a 3.22 GPA in child development. The University of North Carolina is one of the most honored programs in the history of these Academic All-America awards. Carolina has had 49 student-athletes named to first team national spots over the course of the years.
