Final Stats

CHAPEL HILL -- Delia Cox tallied four goals and an assist for five points as the No. 9 Maryland held off No. 6 North Carolina, 14-7, in collegiate women's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at Henry Stadium on the University of North Carolina campus.

A 7-0 scoring run late in the first half turned a 2-1 Tar Heel advantage into an 8-2 Maryland lead at halftime. Carolina fought back in the second half but could get no closer than three goals on two separate occasions.

Christina Juras scored four goals in a losing effort for UNC. Allison Higgins had three assists for the Tar Heels.

Carolina took a 2-1 lead early in the game, as Gina Allen scored at the 26:35 mark and Juras scored at 21:42 while Brooke Richards scored for Maryland at 25:51. The Terrapins then went on a 7-0 run to close the half with an 8-2 advantage. Annie Collins and Delia Cox each scored twice for Maryland during its scoring run.

In the first half, the Terps held an 8-3 advantage in draw controls and an 18-9 edge in shots. The Tar Heels were just 7 for 12 on clears, giving Maryland extra opportunities in the UNC end of the field.

In the second half, Maryland struck first to take a 9-2 lead with 28:24 left to play. The Tar Heels then scored four consecutive goals to cut the lead to 9-6. Three of those four scores came in a 51-second span. During the run, Jenn Cook collected two straight draw controls, leading directly to two quick scores in a span of 18 seconds.

The Tar Heels could not pull any closer than three goals, however.

Maryland made it 10-6 on a Cox goal at 19:09 before Juras scored off an Allison Higgins assist with 16:41 left made it 10-7. Katie Doolittle scored off a Collins pass with 14:44 left to make it 11-7 Terps. Cox's unassisted insurance goal with 10:14 left upped the margin to 12-7, a margin from which the Tar Heels could not recover.

Collins added a late goal for the Terrapins and ended the game with three goals and an assist. Katie Doolittle scored three goals and Krista Pellizzi had a goal and two assists.

The Tar Heels' final regular season game will be next Saturday, Apr. 23, at 1 p.m. vs. Old Dominion at Fetzer Field. The following weekend is the ACC Tournament, to be held Apr. 28-May 1 in Baltimore, Md.
