No. 6 Georgetown Defeats No. 11 Tar Heels, 9-6

CHAPEL HILL - The Georgetown University women's lacrosse team, ranked No. 6 in the nation in this week's IWLCA national poll, scored four goals in the first six minutes of action and defeated No. 11 North Carolina 9-6 on Sunday afternoon at Henry Stadium in Chapel Hill. Gloria Lozano had four goals for the Hoyas with Allison Chambers adding two. Beth Ames led the Tar Heels with three goals. With the win, Georgetown improves to 7-3 this season. UNC falls to 4-7 with the loss and has lost four of its last five games. Georgetown jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead in the first six minutes of the game. Lozano had two of those initial goals and had four total scores in the first half. Ater goals by Ames and Dieringer cut it to 4-2 Hoyas at the 7:18 mark, Lozano scored back-to-back goals to make it 6-2 Georgetown. The Hoyas led the contest 7-3 at halftime. After a GU goal by Elizabeth Ryan just over a minute into the second half, the Tar Heels scored three consecutive goals in a six-minute stretch to cut the lead to 8-6 less than eight minutes into the period. Carolina could get no closer and would not score again, missing several good scoring opportunities. Two Tar Heel shots late in the game went off the pipe and UNC failed to capitalize on two late free position shots as well. The Tar Heels will return to action next Saturday when they play at Vanderbilt at 1 p.m. in Nashville, Tenn. Carolina was originally scheduled to play James Madison on Wednesday but that game has been cancelled.
