Carolina's Lever Tied For Lead At NCAA East Regional

May 10, 2002

BATON ROUGE, LA. - North Carolina senior Beth Lever fired a four-under-par 68, the low round of her collegiate career, and is tied for the individual lead after the first round of the NCAA East Regional. The Tar Heels, scoring their best round so far this spring, posted a 294 total and are in sixth place of the team race.

Florida leads the field of 21 teams carding a two-under 286 for the day and is one shot ahead of Auburn which posted a 287. South Florida stands in third place with a 289 total while Duke is fourth at 291 and Wake Forest is fifth at 293. Following the Tar Heels who are in sixth place is Vanderbilt in seventh place with a 296 total, Louisiana State in eighth place at 297 and Furman and South Carolina tied for ninth at 298.

"We were really pleased to get off to a good start and put ourselves in decent postion," said North Carolina Head Coach Sally Austin. "Beth turned in a round we knew she was capable of shooting and it couldn't have come at a better time. But getting off to a good start is key."

Tied with Carolina's Lever for the individual lead are Meredith Duncan of Louisiana State and Jameica Duncombe of South Florida who also carded four-under 68s. A trio of players are one shot back deadlocked in a tie for fourth place at 67 -- Florida's Whitney Code, Furman's Jennifer Perri and Auburn's Celeste Troche.

For the Tar Heels, sophomore Ashley Prange fired a 73 and is tied for 21st place. Junior Meghan Adams carded a 76 and is tied for 52nd while junior Abby Spector posted a 77 and is tied for 56th and freshman Romi Irons shot 82 and is tied for 97th place.

The 54-hole event continues through Saturday at LSU's University Club which features a par 72, 6,276-yard layout. The top eight teams and top two individuals not on those eight teams advance on to the NCAA Championships to be played May 21-24 at the Washington National Golf Club in Auburn, Wash.
