UNC in the NCAA Tournament
Making their 20th appearance in the NCAA Field Hockey Tournament field, the fourth-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels (16-5) will open play on Saturday, Nov. 15 at 11 a.m. with a first-round game against sixth-ranked Michigan (15-5) in East Lansing, Mich. Carolina is the fourth seed in the 16-team tournament.
This weekend's games, hosted by Michigan State, will be played at the MSU Field Hockey Complex (cap. 1,000).
Other teams playing at Michigan State are Louisville (13-9) and the host Spartans (16-4), who will meet Saturday at 2 p.m. in the other first-round game. The winners will meet Sunday, Nov. 16 at 2 p.m. for a spot in the NCAA Championships Nov. 21 and 23 in Amherst, Mass.

Carolina vs. the East Lansing field
UNC vs. Michigan:
The Tar Heels and Wolverines have met eight times, with Carolina holding a 6-2 advantage in the series. The teams played in this year's season opener, at the ACC/Big Ten Challenge in Ann Arbor, Mich., on Aug. 31. UNC won that game 4-0, with goals by Rachel Dawson, Kerry Falgowski, Carey Fetting-Smith and Katy Potter.
The teams' only NCAA Tournament meeting was in the first round in 2001, when Michigan won 5-2 in Ann Arbor. The game was scoreless at halftime, but the Wolverines took over in the second half to earn their first-ever win over UNC. Carolina finished the year 14-7 and UM went on to win the 2001 NCAA Championship.
UNC vs. Michigan State:
The Tar Heels and Spartans met this season on Sept. 6 in the Temple Invitational in Philadelphia, where UNC won 3-0. Laree Beans, Laura Douglas and Kelsey Keeran scored second-half goals as Carolina earned the win. The Tar Heels lead the series with Michigan State 4-0.
UNC vs. Louisville:
The Tar Heels and Cardinals have met just twice and their series is tied at 1-1. The most recent game was in 2002, when Louisville won 3-2 in overtime in the opening game of the Temple Invitational in Philadelphia. Carolina's victory in the series came in the 1977 season, when UNC won 2-0 on Nov. 11 in the AIAW Region I Tournament in Williamsburg, Va.
