Tar Heels Place 26 On Dean's List

Jan. 15, 2003

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - A total of 26 members of the North Carolina rowing team earned Dean's List honors for the fall 2002 semester and the squad finished with an overall GPA of 3.234.

"We are all very pleased with the program's academic success this past fall," said UNC coach Sarah Haney, a former Tar Heel rower who is in her first season as head coach. "Their success in the classroom is a tremendous testament to the student-athletes' ability to balance academics with athletics."

Although the team competes mostly in the spring, the Tar Heels keep very busy in the fall with practices, conditioning and occasional competitions.

Varsity squad members who made the Dean's List were: Julie Domina, Rawan Kablawi, Kara Kerscher, Kim Lyko, Terry McCloskey, Emily Mills, Abi Raja, Mollie Silver, Holly Spain, Lauren Tarabokia and Jordana Werner.

Novice squad members were: Jennifer Cox, Kyla Davidoff, Susan Fisk, Hilary Godette, Sarah Hayter, Stephanie Hoffman, Caroline Jacobini, Clara Leigh, Anna McDonald, Lauren Portnow, Leah Shissias, Allison Standard, Sarah Stargel and Claire Young.

Now conditioning and workout out on land, the team is scheduled to return to the water on Jan. 29. The Tar Heels open the spring season on March 1 against Duke. That race, to be held at University Lake, is UNC's only home event of the season.
