Tar Heels Split On Day One Of Virginia Duals

Jan. 13, 2006

HAMPTON, Va. - After posting a 24-12 win over UC Davis in its first dual match of the day, No. 5 seed North Carolina (9-2) was edged by No. 4 seed Chattanooga, 17-16, Friday in the quarterfinals of the 26th annual Virginia Duals at Hampton Coliseum. The Tar Heels return to action 10 a.m. Saturday against Rider in the consolation bracket, while the Mocs (7-5-1) move on to face top-seeded Indiana in Saturday's semifinals.

After topping UC Davis this morning, the Tar Heels faced Chattanooga for the second time on the young season. Carolina posted a 24-15 win over the Mocs at the season-opening Mat Jam Duals, but quickly found themselves in a 7-0 hole after dropping their first two bouts Friday.

Redshirt freshman Vincent Ramirez got Carolina on the board with a key 6-5 win over UTC All-America Michael Keefe at 141, and sophomore Chris Ramos followed with a 3-0 victory over Aaron Martin to trim the Chattanooga lead to 7-6. The Mocs then won three of the next four bouts, with UNC sophomore Alex Maciag victorious at 174.

Carolina juniors David Dashiell and Spencer Nadolsky both won for the second time on the day to close the match, but the two decisions left the Tar Heels one point short. Dashiell, now 24-8, posted a 7-3 win over Lloyd Rogers at 197, and Nadolsky improved to 26-2 with a 2-1 victory over Israel Silva.

Earlier in the day, the Tar Heels picked up major decision victories in two of the first three bouts versus UC Davis and never looked back, cruising their ninth win of the season. Junior Bobby Shaw opened with an 11-1 win over Marcos Orozco at 125, and Ramirez followed with a 10-0 shutout of Nexi Delgado at 141. Dashiell also added a 14-6 major decision win over Eliot Kelly at 197 to help seal the victory.

Sophomores Chris Ramos (149) and Justin Dobies (184), and juniors Brian Baglio (157) and Nadolsky also picked up wins in the Tar Heels' first dual of the day.

In addition to Dashiell and Nadolsky, Ramirez and Ramos were also 2-0 Friday.
