May 21, 2003 Norman, Okla. - North Carolina's assistant men's golf coach, Jamie Green, is one of three finalist for the inaugural Jan Strickland Assistant Coach of the Year Award as announced by the Golf Coaches Association of America. The other finalists are Jason Widener of Duke and Mike McGraw of Oklahoma State. "We are very pleased to recognize these fine individuals as finalists for the Jan Strickland Assistant Coach of the Year Award," said GCAA Coach of the Year committee chairman Mark Crabtree. "They are each very talented and have been instrumental in the success of each of their respective programs." Green is in his fourth year as head coach John Inman's assistant coach. Before arriving in Chapel Hill in July 1999, Green served as the assistant men's golf coach at Auburn for two years. Prior to that, Green coached seasonally as the assistant men's coach at Dartmouth and for the Tulane women's team from 1995-97. Green is a Class "A" PGA professional and has served as an assistant club professional at five different facilities. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1993 and was a three-year lettermen on the Ohio Wesleyan golf team and competed in the 1992 NCAA Division III Championship. "Jamie being considered for this award just shows what an outstanding job he's done here at UNC," said head coach John Inman. "Obviously, the success our team has experienced shows we've been recruiting some of the top players in the country. I think Jamie is very deserving of the inaugural Jan Strickland Assistant Coach of the Year Award."
The GCAA's Jan Strickland Assistant Coach of the Year Award will be given to the NCAA Division I, II, III or NAIA assistant coach that, among other things, has excelled in working with their student-athletes both on and off the course and in the classroom. The recipient of this award will have the opportunity to further their professional development by being a guest of TaylorMade-adidas Golf, the award's corporate sponsor, at the PGA Teaching and Coaching Summit, as well as, an invitation to the TaylorMade-adidas Golf Kingdom in Carlsbad, Calif.
