Tar Heel Men's Golf Team 27th At NCAA Championship

SUNRIVER, ORE. - The University of North Carolina men's golf team fired a nine-over-par 297 in the first round of the NCAA Championship at Sunriver Resort's Crosswater Golf Course. Wake Forest leads the field of 30 teams after firing an 11-under-par 277. The Demon Deacons hold a three stroke advantage over UCLA which carded an eight-under 280. Washington and Oklahoma State are tied for third place at 281 while Clemson is fifth at 282, Kentucky is sixth at 283 and a trio of teams is tied for seventh place at four-under 284 - Florida, NC State and Oklahoma. Tar Heel junior Martin Ureta, from Santiago, Chile, fired an even par 72 and is tied for 51st place. Senior Ted Smith, from Westlake, Ohio, tallied a one-over 73 and is tied for 68th place. Jonathan Jackson, a senior from Chapel Hill, and Robert Riesen, a freshman from Pinehurst, N.C.,both carded a 76 and are tied for 118th place while freshman Chase MacFarland, from Savannah, Ga., posted a 77 and is tied for 136th. Kyle Reifers from Wake Forest fired a seven-under 65 to grab the individual lead after the first round. Pablo Martin from Oklahoma State and Taylor Wood of Southern California are one stroke back in second place at six-under 66 while Washington's Alex Prugh is alone in fourth place at five-under 67. Four players are tied for fifh place at four-under 68 - Oklahoma State's Jonathan Moore, Charlotte's Ray Sheedy, UCLA's Daniel Im and East Tennessee State's Cian McNamara. The 72-hole event continues through Saturday at the Sunriver Resort's Crosswater Golf Course which features a par 72, 7,630-yard layout. After 54 holes the field will be cut to the top 15 teams and top six individuals not on those 15 teams.
