North Carolina Men's Golf Advances To NCAA Championship

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - North Carolina men's golf team won a sudden-death playoff against rival North Carolina State to secure a tenth place finish and will advance to the NCAA Championship. UNC began the day in third place and seemed to have fallen out of the race for a top 10 finish after a 25 over-par team performance. However, the Tar Heels, who had already gone back to their hotel, found themselves at the end of the day tied with the Wolfpack. UNC won the sudden-death playoff 15-17 by virtue of a 12-foot birdie putt by Dustin Bray.

The Tar Heels will advance to the NCAA Championship which will be held Tuesday through Friday, June 1-4, in Hot Springs, Virginia at the Cascades Course at The Homestead which features a par 70, 6,679 yard layout.

Clemson won the team title by firing a tournament-best three-under-par 277 in the final round for a 856 total. Penn State finished second at 862 while Georgia Tech and Georgia tied for fourth at 864.

Bill Haas of Wake Forest won the individual championship after firing a 54 hole total of three-under-par 207. Kenneth Fahey of Rhode Island and Carmilo Villegas of Florida tied for second at 208 while five golfers tied for fourth. U NC golfer Dustin Bray followed his four-under-par 66 on Friday with a four-over-par 74 on Saturday leaving him tied for 17th overall. Ted Smith was one stroke better at 73 and 217 overall. Kevin Silva shot a six-over-par 76 for a 223 total while Martin Ureta and Matt Crenshaw both shot 12-over-par 82's leaving then tied for 90th and 99th, respectively.
