UNC Men's Golf In Third At Andrea Brotto Cavalier Classic

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The University of North Carolina men's golf team finished the first and second round of play in third place at a total two-over-par 578 at the Andrea Brotto Cavalier Classic on Friday in Charlottesville, Va.

Their first time through the course, the Tar Heels shot a four-under 284 which gave them the low team score for the first round. Later on Friday, the Tar Heels played the second round at six-over 294, which dropped them to third place going into Saturday's third and final round.

Carolina senior Dustin Bray also finished the day in third place, carding a pair of two-under 70s for a total four-under 140.

Freshman Martin Ureta shot a first-round three-under 69. That, combined with his second-round one-over 73, put him in a tie for fifth place at two-under 142.

In the team race, UNC trails a first-place Furman who leads the field of 11 at three-under 573. UNC-Wilmington is four shots behind at 577 and in second place.

Furman's T.J. Blandford is tied for first place in the individual race with a second-round 67, the low score of the day, which gives him a total five-under 139. Sharing the lead with Blandford is Andrea Signor of the Italian National Team, also at five-under 139.

For UNC, sophomore Ted Smith is tied in 21st place with a 72 and 76 for a total four-over 148. Sophomore Kevin Silva, tied for 39th, shot a 73 and 80 for a total nine-over 153. And junior Matt Crenshaw carded a 79 and a 75 for a total 10-over 154 and tie for 46th.

The 17th Cavalier Classic is being played on the Birdwood Golf Course, a par 72, 6,875-yard course. The third and final round will begin Saturday at 8 a.m. with the players in twosomes.
