Peacocks Win One at Missouri Western Tourney




Playing some difficult competition, Upper Iowa was able to win one game at the Missouri Western Tournament this weekend. The Peacocks finished 1-4 and saw their record move to 11-12 on the season. Upper Iowa will host Winona State in the UIU home opener Tuesday at 2 p.m.
 
EMPORIA STATE 6, UPPER IOWA 2
Emporia State scored four runs in the third inning to defeat Upper Iowa 6-2 on the first day of the two-day tournament. Trailing 6-0, Upper Iowa scored single runs in the sixth and seventh innings. Katie Kilburg scored the first run on an RBI groundout and hit a solo home run in the seventh. Katie Kilburg had two of the four UIU hits. The Peacocks left the bases loaded in the sixth. Angie Weber took the loss. She allowed six hits and struck out nine.
 
MISSOURI WESTERN 13, UPPER IOWA 1 (5 inn.)
Upper Iowa jumped to an early 1-0 lead before host Missouri Western blew things open. Katie Kilburg's single brought in her sister Jena Kilburg in the first inning. Missouri Western scored four runs in both the third and fourth innings before ending the game with a five-run fifth inning. Katie Kilburg again led the offense with two hits. Kacie Estes took the loss. She was hurt by three Peacock errors.
 
WASHBURN 5, UPPER IOWA 3
Angie Weber allowed only five hits, but four were home runs, in Upper Iowa's 5-3 loss. Washburn hit solo home runs in the third and fourth innings to take a 2-1 lead. Washburn completed its scoring with a solo blast and a two-run homer in the fifth inning. Kami Appelt accounted for all three Peacock runs. Her double in the fourth brought in Katie Kilburg with the first run, and she later added a two-run double in the sixth. Appelt, Katie Kilburg and Jena Kilburg each had two hits in UIU's final game Saturday. Weber struck out five.
 
UPPER IOWA 3, CENTRAL MISSOURI STATE 2
Down 2-0 in the fourth inning, Upper Iowa tied the game on a two-run double from Kami Appelt. The game remained tied until the bottom of the seventh inning. Kelly Wagenknecht hit a one-out single before Danielle DeSerano came in to pinch run. Brittany Sinnwell and Jena Kilburg followed with singles to load the bases with only one out. Stephany Daubenspeck drew a walk to force in the winning run. Katie Kilburg had two of UIU's eight hits. Freshman Kacie Estes earned the win. She allowed seven hits and two runs over seven innings. Estes struck out three.
 
TRUMAN 11, UPPER IOWA 7
The Peacocks lost the final game of the tournament to Truman 11-7. Each team hit three home runs. Stephany Daubenspeck, Katie Kilburg and Brittany Sinnwell homered for Upper Iowa. Daubenspeck, Jena Kilburg, Priscilla Rubalcava and Marcy Esparza each had two hits. UIU trailed 4-0 before scoring five times in the third inning. A solo home run from Sinnwell and a two-run shot from Daubenspeck were the big blows. Katie Kilburg hit her home run in the fifth. Kami Appelt and Daubenspeck had RBI singles and Esparza drove in a run on a groundout. Angie Weber took the loss. She allowed 10 hits and struck out nine.
